Skiing in the Himalaya

Skiing in the Himalaya

In the winter months some of the snow-covered slopes of Himachal become ideal for skiing, and heli-skiing is becoming increasingly popular. The Mountaineering Institute of Manali orgainses skiing courses from January onwards, while the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation does so simultaneously at Narkanda. At Solang, 10 km from Manali, the ski slopes are set against a backdrop of glaciers and majestic peaks. The slopes of Kufri and Narkanda, 16 km and 64 km respectively, from Shimla, are ideal for recreational skiing.
Rohtang Pass and Solang Nallah offer a variety of slopes for skiers. Some easy runs are provided for beginners who can take a course or just hire an instructor for a short while from the directorate of Mountaineering and Allied sports or a one of the other agencies registered with department of Tourism.

Sking facilities are available throughout the year at Rohtang. Expert skiers can enjoy helisking during the winter months for which they may contact the department of Tourism.

For many years my team and I have been trekking in the Indian Himalaya. Now a great opportunity exists for You to share in our knowledge of some of the most fascinating areas of this country – the Kullu, Zanskar, Ladakh and Spiti Valley.

Go trekking if You wish, with our experienced and friendly guides, cooks and horsemen. Walk the pine trails, explore the mountain slopes, visit thousand years old Monasteries or climb the tall peaks for a truly breathtaking view.
